🚨‼️Hyperpigmentation is a condition where patches of skin become darker than the surrounding area
This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin Various factors can contribute to hyperpigmentation, including:
➡️Sun Exposure: UV rays stimulate the production of melanin, leading to sun spots or age spots
➡️Inflammation: Skin injuries or inflammation, such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis, can result in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
➡️Medical Conditions: Certain diseases like Addison’s disease or melasma can cause hyperpigmentation
➡️Medications: Some drugs, such as chemotherapy agents, can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect
➡️Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone therapy can trigger melasma, characterized by dark, blotchy patches
Hyperpigmentation types include:
➡️Melasma: Brown/gray patches due to hormonal changes or sun exposure, commonly on the face
➡️Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Dark spots after skin inflammation or injury, anywhere on the body
➡️Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines): Flat, dark spots from chronic sun exposure, on the face, hands, and arms
➡️Freckles (Ephelides): Small brown spots from sun exposure and genetics, mainly on the face and upper body
➡️Medication-Induced: Dark spots from certain drugs, varying in location
