• Mars rover Perseverance has discovered a mysterious rock on the Red Planet

The NASA astronomical agency is once again delighting space exploration fans with interesting discoveries. One of the latest surprises has sent scientists pondering the origin of a strange object found on the surface of Mars. The Perseverance rover came across an unusual find — a huge boulder, the composition of which caused many questions among researchers.

    What is this unusual stone?
This object measuring about 80 centimeters was named "Phippsaxla", which is the name of the famous Norwegian rock. The found stone is notable for the fact that it consists mainly of nickel and iron.

This compound is more typical for the deep layers of planets and some types of asteroids than for the surface rocks of Mars. That is why the researchers suggested that Phippsaxla could well be a guest from outer space.

The location of the discovery is the area of the Jezero crater, known for its unique geological features. After the discovery, the rover used its scientific equipment to study the mysterious visitor in detail.

Thanks to the SuperCam device, the first data on the chemical composition of the stone was obtained. The analysis confirmed the presence of significant concentrations of nickel and iron, which made the find even more intriguing.

However, it is too early to speak unequivocally about its origin. To accurately determine the nature of Phippsaxla's appearance on Mars, scientists will need to conduct additional research. This means that laboratory tests will be needed here on Earth.

Meanwhile, NASA experts refrain from commenting on attempts to collect a sample of the substance for subsequent return to our planet. However, the delivery of Martian rocks to Earth in the next decade is unlikely, since the delivery mission has been postponed indefinitely.

What is Perseverance and why was it sent to Mars?
Perseverance is an American Mars rover launched by NASA in the summer of 2020 specifically to search for traces of ancient life on the Red Planet.

The main purpose of the mission is to collect and store soil and rock samples that will be brought back to Earth by future expeditions. Among other things, Perseverance is equipped with tools for chemical analysis of materials, a SuperCam laser spectrometer and powerful high-resolution panoramic cameras.

In addition to scientific equipment, the rover is equipped with an automatic piloting system that allows it to navigate autonomously through the difficult terrain of the planet. This modern robotic researcher should make a significant contribution to understanding the history of the development of Mars and the possibilities of life on it billions of years ago.

Thus, the discovery of Phippsaxla has become an important event for the scientific community, but the full disclosure of the mystery of the origin of this meteorite remains a matter of the future. Research continues, and we are waiting for new amazing discoveries!
